Safeguarding Democracy and Human Rights in the Digital Age

The Digital Democracy Initiative works closely with civil society partners CIVICUS, Global Focus, Digital Defenders Partnership, and Access Now. 

As autocrats are increasingly misusing digital platforms to spread fake news, suppress dissenting voices, and deprive people of their fundamental rights, new programs are required to protect people’s rights in the technology-driven world.

In this direction, the Digital Democracy Initiative (DDI) is a program aimed at safeguarding inclusive democracy and human rights in the digital age. The DDI focuses on support to local civil society in the Global South, particularly in countries undergoing democratic regression and where civic space is under pressure. read more

#ThankYouDemocracy – World Leaders Launch Democracy Campaign

To promote this initiative, videos have been launched on social media of important figures in the defence of democracy explaining why it is necessary to defend it.

The Global Democracy Coalition (GDC) launched ‘The Voice and Value of Democracy’ campaign at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit (May 14-15, 2024) with the aim of transforming the prevailing narrative and countering recent negative perceptions of democracy.

Convened by International IDEA with civil society partners, the Global Democracy Coalition is a multi-stakeholder alliance of more than 120 democracy organizations from around the world committed to advance and protect democracy worldwide. read more

Global Campaign Calls for a UN Special Rapporteur on Democracy

The democracy rapporteur would be mandated to investigate the state of democracy from a broader perspective.

As the UN celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 2023, a global campaign demands the appointment of a dedicated staffer to report on the state of democracy around the world.

The campaign was launched on 20 November 2023 by the Berlin (Germany)-based global network of civil society organizations Democracy Without Borders (DWB). It calls on the United Nations (UN) to appoint a special rapporteur on democracy. read more
